HKUST Honors Outstanding Non-academic Staff Members
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today presented its fourth “HKUST President’s Outstanding Service Award” to laud and recognize dedicated non-academic staff members for their outstanding contributions and exemplary performance. The four award recipients are Mr Ho Shun-sing, Chief Security Officer of the Facilities Management Office; Prof Joseph Kwan Kai-cho, Director of Health, Safety and Environment; Ms Patricia Lai Suk-ching, Assistant Director (UG Affairs Administration) of the Office of the Dean of Engineering; and Mr Doug Wong Chung Tak, Computer Officer of the Information Technology Services Center.

HKUST Hosts First University Fintech Education Forum
The Big Data Institute (BDI) of HKUST co-hosted the first ever University Fintech Education Forum with partners Financial Data Technologies Ltd (FDT) and Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). Speakers in the forum include many prominent figures in the fintech and big data industry, such as Qifeng Liu, Co-founder and CEO of FDT-AI, Henry Ma, Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of Webank, Ying Yan, Lead researcher from Microsoft Research,  James Lei, Acting Director of ASTRI, and Yang Qiang, Head of Department of Computer Science & Engineering, and Director of the Big Data Institute. In his opening address, President Prof Tony F Chan emphasizes the importance of the synergy between fintech and big data/AI research in a rapidly changing world. “Societies that response quickly will see their economy stay ahead and competitive in this digital age.”

The 2017-2018 HKUST Intramural Athletics Meet was held successfully through the co-operation of event organizers (Sports Association and Students? Track and Field Club, HKUSTSU), 6 sports advisors from Student Affairs Office as chief officials, over 60 UG student volunteers.

HKUST Holds 25th Congregation Conferring Honorary Doctorates on Four Distinguished Academics and Community Leaders
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its 25th Congregation today (17 November) and conferred honorary doctorates on four eminent academics and community leaders.  The Honorable Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the HKSAR government and Chancellor of the University, GBM, GBS, presided over today’s ceremony.  HKUST honorary doctorates were awarded to four outstanding individuals in recognition of their distinguished achievements and contributions.  This year’s recipients were (in alphabetical order): Prof Emmanuelle Charpentier, Director of the Department of Infection Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology – Doctor of Science honoris causa Mr Ian Fok Chun-Wan, Chief Executive Officer of Fok Ying Tung Group – Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa

Now rated the number one university in Hong Kong by the latest QS Asia University Rankings 2018, HKUST’s star continues to rise. A key factor determining these rankings is, of course, the quality of a university’s faculty. Attracting and recognizing the very best academic talent is one of the key objectives of HKUST’s five-year strategic plan, and this latest QS accolade is yet another confirmation that this goal is being realized.

HKUST Holds Fourth Inauguration Ceremony of Named Professorships for Outstanding Faculty Members
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the fourth inauguration ceremony of named professorships today to honor 15 outstanding faculty members and their donors. Officiating at the ceremony, HKUST Council Chairman Mr Andrew Liao Cheung-sing said, “My heartfelt gratitude goes to our donors for their generous giving that made possible the establishment of the named professorships today.  Our donors’ unfailing support has allowed the University to recruit as well as retain, the best talents in education and research from around the globe, empowering us to endeavor in the advancement of knowledge and innovation to meet challenges of the society ahead.”
