HKUST Hackathon Received a Record-High Participation
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the largest student-driven hackathon in Asia from April 21-23, 2017, with more than 600 participants coming from various local and overseas universities.
The HKUST hackathon is a creativity-to-reality platform which brings together like-minded youths from different academic backgrounds to develop product prototypes, build friendships, and exchange ideas with industry experts.
This year’s edition added a new hardware component which challenges the participants to bring their skills to a whole new level—all participating teams had to come up with a hardware solution to tackle within 48 hours. For contestants joining the software hackathon, they were required to work out a software solution within 24 hours under the themes of Gaming, Economy, Healthcare and Transportation.

Launch of 25th Anniversary Book “Prometheus in the Sky”
The title of the book Prometheus in the Sky is derived from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s idealist Prometheus Unbound, which conveys the morals of altruism, courage, innovation, and care for society. Prometheus was described as the one who tamed fire for humankind, generated curiosity in science, aroused study of medicine to save lives and gave humans language for better communication and knowledge. In celebrating the 25th anniversary of the University, the title echoes its core spirit as a science and technology university with a global vision and local commitment.

HKUST Presents Long Service Awards 2017
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony to honor faculty and staff members who have served the University for 20 years.
HKUST established the Long Service Award to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members whose dedication and hard work have contributed to the University’s rapid rise over the past 26 years. This year, HKUST presented awards to 66 colleagues with 20 years of service at University.
HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan, together with the vice-presidents, deans, heads and directors of departments and offices joined the presentation ceremony. The awardees’ families and friends were also invited by the University to attend the event and share the happiness of the celebration.

Nobel Laureate Professor Hiroshi Amano Speaks on the Development of LEDs at the Last Talk of HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the last round of its Distinguished Speakers Series today - a talk series launched over a year ago to celebrate the University’s 25th anniversary. Prof Hiroshi Amano, a renowned physicist and engineer in semiconductor technology, marked the 9th Nobel laureate and the 27th who spoke for the series hosted by corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and key financial policy shapers around the world.

HKUST Jockey Club Hall Opens to Promote Holistic Education and Eco-friendliness
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) staged an opening ceremony yesterday for HKUST Jockey Club Hall – a new residential building at Tseung Kwan O that provides 512 bed spaces for undergraduate students. The off-campus hostel was named after The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) for its generous donation of HK$33 million to help undergraduate students with the opportunity to stay in a student hostel for at least one year of their course.

Take A Smile: Promoting Positive Energy
"We create our own happiness." Positive psychology is about creating our own happiness in a proactive manner. Psychological research suggested that we have a capacity to control our individual happiness. We hope by participating in the event, students would learn more about how these "happiness habit" work and then put them into practice in our daily life.
