The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) – a signature program at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to give undergraduate students an early taste of research under the guidance of faculty members, has nurtured many young talented researchers since its launch in 2005.  Year 2 Physics student Ho-tat Lam, champion of the University Research Award this year, will attend two international conferences this summer to share with scholars worldwide his new research findings.

A team of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) students won the grand prize at a highly challenging MBA competition organized by the Columbia Business School in the US. It was the first time that a team from Hong Kong joined this invitation-only event, which is open only to the top business schools in the world. Columbia's Global MBA Competition brings together the world's brightest MBA students to test their business aptitude in a two-day contest. The competition consists of three events in three completely different areas: a case analysis, an entrepreneurial pitch, and a negotiation competition.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the recipients of the School of Engineering (SENG) Research Excellence Awards 2014. The recipients are outstanding scholars who have made significant discoveries at the forefront of engineering research. The annual SENG Research Excellence Awards were launched in 2011 to recognize the impact and contributions of the School's faculty members. This year's awards are classified into two categories to encompass faculty members who are in different stages of their academic life. The School currently has about 170 faculty members across its six departments.

A team of HKUST undergraduate students won the 2014 Scotiabank International Case Competition organized by the Ivey Business School in Canada. Although the case subject was about Canadian agriculture, an unfamiliar topic for Hong Kong students, the team outperformed their peers from other top business schools around the world and impressed the judges with their thoughtful analysis and practical business solution. Professor Emily Nason, Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs at the HKUST Business School, said, "Case analysis is one of the key learning experiences provided by our programs. Students are presented with business challenges, which can help them develop business sense and critical thinking skills, and be better prepared for future careers."

Two students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have won Top 10 Outstanding Youth Awards - a prestigious prize presented by HKSAR Home Affairs Bureau and Commission on Youth to commend their outstanding achievements in personal development, leadership and social services. Samantha Wing-man Kong, a Year-Three student of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and also Head Student Ambassador, was a dual winner who also scooped the Social Service Award in the commendation scheme. Year-One Science student Phoebe Cheuk-lam Lam was the youngest winner in the Open Category of the Award for eight years' participation in community services.

Researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have received two awards in the 2013 Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) presented by the Ministry of Education - one first-class and one second-class award. Prof Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies congratulated the winning research teams. "The prizes are recognition of our University's on-going efforts to pursue excellence in education, research and innovation. We will continue to look for more collaborative opportunities to deepen ties between local and Mainland scientists, with a view to boost socio-economical development in Hong Kong and Mainland China at large," Prof Lee said.

Prof Ben Zhong Tang, Stephen Kam Chuen Cheong Professor of Science and Chair Professor in the Department of Chemistry at HKUST, has been selected as a laureate of the 27th Khwarizmi International Award (KIA) by the Iranian Organization for Science and Technology. Prof Tang received the Khwarizmi International Award, Second Class, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and its high-tech applications in the areas of optoelectronic devices, chemical sensors, and biological probes.

A team of HKUST MBA students outperformed their peers from the business schools of eight top-ranked institutes including Yale University and University of Chicago, and won the Grand Prize at the Marshall Global Consulting Challenge. The annual business case competition organized by the University of Southern California (USC) is designed to challenge the minds and problem-solving abilities of the best MBA students around the world. The HKUST team was the only contender from Asia. Their thorough preparation, quality analysis, and innovative ideas impressed the judges, and took home the championship in the competition.
