The global transdisciplinary "research-to-operation" (R2O) initiative, “Seamless Prediction and Services for Sustainable Natural and Built Environments” (SEPRESS), led by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of its International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD). Over the next decade, HKUST’s SEPRESS will spearhead efforts to collaborate with global partners in transforming scientific advancements into tailored solutions that enhance climate resilience and sustainability worldwide, with a particular focus on Least Developed Countries. SEPRESS will achieve this by translating progress in weather-to-climate prediction research into scalable solutions and fostering global partnerships to deliver actionable outcomes.

Prof. SONG Xueyang, Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award for her groundbreaking research in theoretical condensed matter physics. Her research promises to revolutionize energy-efficient technologies by designing materials with unprecedented control over electricity and heat. Prof. Song will receive HKD 5 million in funding from the Croucher Foundation to support her future research. The “Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award”, one of the Croucher Foundation's top honors, recognizes Hong Kong's brightest young scientific minds poised to make significant breakthroughs. Recipients are selected for their distinguished doctoral work, internationally competitive research, and high-impact contributions to their fields.

Scientists from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) are among the researchers worldwide honored with the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, often referred to as the "Oscars of Science." This prestigious recognition was presented to the A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS (ATLAS) Collaboration at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for its groundbreaking studies on high-energy collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This recognition highlights a decade of dedicated research and innovation by the HKUST researchers, who have contributed significantly to the ATLAS Collaboration's achievements, including the discovery of the Higgs boson, commonly known as the "God Particle", and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) achieved a record-breaking success at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva concluding today.   Thirty-seven HKUST teams won a total of 38 awards, including two special grand prizes, 22 Gold Medals (of which seven received Congratulations of the Jury), and multiple Silver and Bronze Medals, showcasing the University’s outstanding performance across different fields including life and health technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and data science, advanced manufacturing, new energy technologies and aerospace engineering. HKUST outshone other local universities and smashed its own record with this extraordinary haul of awards, reaffirming its status as a powerhouse of creativity and invention.

Professor LUK Kam-Biu, IAS Paul C W Chu Professor, has been elected 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his 'distinguished contributions to particle physics, particularly the leadership of experiments that have shed new light on CP violation and neutrino oscillations'.  The AAAS is one of the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of scientific journals. It recognizes the extraordinary achievements of scientists, engineers and innovators across disciplines through its AAAS Fellows Program. All new Fellows will be inducted in AAAS’ Fellows Forum where they will be presented with a certificate and a blue and gold rosette pin representing science and engineering.

Two courses from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)’s Center for Education Innovation (CEI) have won three prestigious international education awards for their achievements in integrating AI and education and enhancing in-class engagement and self-learning incentives for students, underscoring HKUST’s leadership in pioneering innovative education in the era of AI. 

Croucher Foundation held its Foundation Day Dinner and Awards Presentation Ceremony on 6 December to present the Croucher Senior Research Fellowships 2025 to three distinguished scholars from City University of Hong Kong (CityU), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU), for their outstanding scientific research achievements. HKUST Vice-President for Research and Development Prof. Tim CHENG Kwang-Ting was honored with a 2024 CCF Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award by China Computer Federation (CCF). Prof. Cheng is concurrently a Chair Professor jointly in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Director of AI Chip Center for Emerging Smart Systems (ACCESS), a research center under the Hong Kong government’s InnoHK initiative.
