HKUST and TPRe Sign MoU on Research and Business Collaborations
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Taiping Reinsurance Co., Ltd. (TPRe) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 4, 2025, to jointly develop and transfer new technologies to solve problems faced by the insurance industry and to gradually establish a long-term partnership. The signing ceremony was held at the China Taiping Finance Center. Prof. GUO Yike, HKUST Provost, and Mr. ZHAO Feng, Deputy General Manager of China Taiping Insurance Group Company Limited (China Taiping), witnessed the ceremony. Prof. ZHANG Limin, Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST, and Mr. YU Xiaodong, Chief Executive Officer of TPRe, signed the MoU on behalf of the two parties. Mr. Stephen WAI, Director of Business Development at the Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Center (LSCM), and Dr. David LIU, Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of Stellerus Tech, also attended the ceremony.

HKUST Taps into Deeper Collaboration Opportunities with University of Bristol and University of East Anglia
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the delegations from the University of Bristol and the University of East Anglia on campus, on March 4. These visits strengthened HKUST’s long-standing partnerships with both institutions. HKUST Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Prof. WANG Yang and Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science, Prof. XIE Ting met with Prof. WONG Liang-Fong, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (Internationalisation) of the University of Bristol. The meeting focused on expanding student mobility and developing joint postgraduate programs. Prof. Wong also expressed interest in joining the HKUST Global Knowledge Network (GKN), a seed grant initiative designed to promote collaborative research. Following the discussions, Prof. Wong toured the Jockey Club STEM Lab of Regenerative Biology, one of HKUST’s cutting-edge research facilities.

HKUST and CEDD Sign MoU on Research Studies
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today (February 28) to set out the framework of collaboration on research studies related to sustainable infrastructure development and land formation.          The MoU was signed by the Vice-President for Research and Development of HKUST, Prof. Tim CHENG, and the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr. Michael FONG, and witnessed by the President of HKUST, Prof. Nancy IP, and the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr. Ricky LAU. The MoU, effective from March 1 for a duration of two years, will cover research areas in novel construction materials, innovative landslide mitigation strategies, digitalization, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, as well as innovative engineering and sustainable solutions.

HKUST Strengthens Research Collaborations with The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) warmly welcomed a delegation from The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) on February 13. The delegation, led by Dr. Andreas GÖTHENBERG, Executive Director of STINT, and Dr. Erik FORSBERG, STINT’s Representative in APAC, was received by Prof. Tim CHENG, HKUST Vice-President for Research and Development. The meeting facilitated meaningful exchanges on potential research collaborations and strategic talent development initiatives within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Prof. Cheng highlighted Hong Kong’s distinctive position in the GBA, as well as HKUST’s pioneering role as Hong Kong’s first research-intensive university, emphasizing its commitment to global academic engagement and scientific advancement.

HKUST Engages Top UK and US Medical Schools to Advance Creation of Hong Kong’s Third Medical School
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is receiving advisory support from Imperial College London (Imperial) and engaging with the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) to pursue the establishment of the city’s third medical school, advancing medical education and clinical training. Echoing the government’s vision of building a third medical school that nurtures more doctors to meet the local demands and assists Hong Kong’s development into an international health and medical innovation hub, HKUST believes that new generations of doctors must possess the ability to serve and lead within the local context and leverage cutting-edge advancements in the global landscape of health and research.
